Libya: Ellafi Holds Talks on 2000Kms Submarine Cable Project

Palermo—A submarine cable project that extends to about 2000 kilometers on the Libyan Mediterranean coast was the focus of a meeting between the Libyan Minister of State for Communications and Political Affairs Walid Ellafi and the Italian Sparkle CEO, Enrico Maria Bagnasco.

The talks took place on the sidelines of the “Digital Connectivity and Mediterranean” conference held in Palermo, Sicily on 23, 24 January 2025. The project links the capital Tripoli in the west, Misurata, Benghazi and the city of Derna in eastern Libya.  

In June 2023, the Libyan holding company for Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology (PTIT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sparkle aiming at implementing this important project, according to the official Hakomitna Facebook platform.

Ellafi also met the Undersecretary of State for Development Policy at the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pasi Hellman, and both discussed ways of enhancing cooperation between Libya and Finland through reactivating partnership with Finnish companies to support sustainable development.

In another meeting with Stefano Sannino, Director General DG MENA of the European Commission, Stefano Sannino, Ellafi discussed mechanisms for future cooperation with United Nations missions and developing a joint strategy to address the issues of migration, technology, and sustainable development in a manner that serves common interests.

Accompanied him in these discussions the Director of the Government Communication Center and a member of the Board of Directors of the PTIT.
