Benghazi— Huge wildfires ignited in the Green Mountain in eastern Libya Saturday evening and has already burned hundreds of hectares in the widespread forests in the region. As of early Sunday morning hours, the fires are raging not far from the Wadi Al-Kouf bridge, a beautiful scenery in the green mountain.

No official accounts have been released as whether the wildfires were a result of the arson or occurred naturally, though some social media reports claim a man was seen starting the fire.

The Roya Foundation for Space Sciences (RFSS) reported developments in the fires raging in some of the Green Mountain highlands in the city of Al-Bayda and its suburbs. These developments coincided with a significant rise in temperatures on Saturday, making it more difficult to control the situation.

Social media accounts circulated photos and videos showing widespread fires raging in the farms of the Al-Awiliyya area, east of Al-Marj, in addition to the areas of Al-Awiliyya, Wadi Al-Kuf, Masa, Radama, and the Boqrawa Forest.

In this context, the Roya Foundation warned of an expected increase in southerly (Qibli) wind gusts in the coming hours, with gusts that could exceed 80 km/h. This could contribute to the expansion of the fires and their severity significantly.

The Foundation called on all residents living near mountainous areas and dense forests to take precautions and stay away from these areas for their own safety.
