Cairo— Both Massad Boulos, President Donald Trump’s Senior Advisor on Arab and Middle Eastern Affairs, and Badr Abdelaatty, the Egyptian FM, agreed on “the importance of working to achieve stability in Libya and end the current state of division,” according a statement by Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
This came during a call made by Mr. Boulos, who is also Trump’s Senior Adviser for Africa, to Mr. Abdelaatty on Sunday during which the two officials exchanged views on the ongoing developments in Libya, Sudan, and the Great Lakes region.
According to the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mr. Abdelaatty with Trump’s Adviser the outcomes of the Tripartite Mechanism meeting of Libya’s neighboring countries of Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria, represented by their foreign ministers.
The meeting emphasized the need to maintain security and stability throughout Libya, safeguard the capabilities of the Libyan state, and respect its unity and territorial integrity. It also underlined the importance of the withdrawal of all foreign forces, mercenaries, and foreign fighters from Libya and the dismantling of armed militias, the statement added.
On 31 May, the US Embassy in Egypt released a statement on X saying, “we welcome the crucial coordination among Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia to promote calm in Libya.” It also said “all Libyan parties should prevent further violence, protect civilians, and return to peaceful dialogue as Libyans work to build a stable and prosperous future.”
The US Embassy also said that two weeks ago Mr. Boulos met the Egyptian President Abdulfattah Al-Sisi, the Foreign Minister and the EGIS Director “to advance shared goals on regional security and African prosperity.”
