Libya: LNA, AFRICOM Explore Strengthening Defense Ties

Sirte—  The Libyan National Army’s (LNA) Deputy Commander Lt. General Saddam Haftar met on Tuesday Lt. Gen John Brennan, Deputy Commander of US Africa Command (AFRICOM) in Sirte where they discussed prospects for military cooperation between the two sides.

The meeting, which was attended by the United States’ Charge d’Affaires in Libya Jeremy Berndt, included an exchange of views on the importance of strengthening bilateral relations, according to a statement by the LNA General Command.

The talks also dealt with ways and means to “combat terrorism and extremism, uphold the law, and confront the phenomenon of illegal immigration,” the General Command’s statement said.

On its part, AFRICOM said on its X platform the meeting discussed “ways to strengthen US-Libya defense ties and US support for Libyan efforts to unify military institutions.”

Also on Tuesday, Lt. Gen Brennan announced that Libya would participate in “exercise Flintlock, which will take place in spring 2026 with key location in Libya.” He added, “we are pleased to partner with Libyan defense leaders from west and east on this important exercise.”

A day earlier, the American delegation held talks in the capital Tripoli with Deputy Defense Minister Abdulsalam Zubi, Chief of Staff Gen. Mohamed Haddad, and Director of Military Intelligence Mahmoud Hamza, all are affiliated with the Government of National Unity (GNU).

They focused on “opportunities to expand the professional development of security forces from all regions of Libya, including through joint training and US support for Libyan efforts to unify military institutions,” a statement by AFICOM said.

“The United States will continue to engage defense leaders in western and eastern Libya. Unity and lasting stability will enable increased prosperity for the Libyan people and their international partners,” it added.
