Libya: Haftar Reaffirms ‘Full Support’ for UNSMIL

Benghazi— Libyan National Army (LNA) General Commander Marshal Khalifa Haftar reiterated his support for the efforts of the United Nations mission in Libya, and all initiatives that would open the way for a political solution, end the division, and advance the political process in the country, a statement by the LNA’s General Command said.

During a meeting with Ms. Hannah Tetteh, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the UN (SRSG), on 3 June, Mr. Haftar affirmed the General Command’s “full support for everything that would create the appropriate conditions for holding the elections, in fulfillment of the Libyan people’s aspirations for a lasting stability,” the statement added.

The meeting took place at Marshal Haftar’s office at the General Command Headquarters in Rajma city located near Benghazi. Tetteh was accompanied with a delegation that included the Deputy SRSG Ms. Stephanie Koury.

Meanwhile, SRSG Hannah Tetteh wrote in a tweet on UNSMIL’s X platform that during her meeting with Haftar they both “reviewed the outcomes of the advisory committee and discussed potential paths forward for Libya.”

“Both emphasized the crucial need to address the Libyan people’s desire to end the current political stalemate and safeguard the nation’s stability and unity,” she said.

According to the LNA’s statement, Ms. Tetteh “expressed her appreciation for the Commander-in-Chief’s prominent role in supporting the political process, commending the efforts of the Armed Forces in enhancing security and stability, and affirming the UN Mission’s commitment to continuing to work with all Libyan parties to achieve national consensus leading to a comprehensive solution.”
