Derna— Libya is importing huge quantity of Turkish natural basalt to be used for the newly constructed 6-kilometer coastal sidewalk in the city of Derna.

The city has been going through a major reconstruction drive since a catastrophic flood disaster in September 2023 caused by Storm Daniel destroyed third of the city and caused the death and missing of more than 20,000 people.

On Thursday, a Turkish ship, Aya M, arrived at Derna Seaport coming from Izmir Port, carrying 501 pallets of natural stone (natural basalt) and it is to be followed by many more shipments in the coming days and weeks, according to the Derna Reconstruction Fund.

This is the first batch of tiles that includes approximately 21,000 square meters of natural basalt stones. The coastal sidewalk will be 8-meter-wide.

Derna is buzzed by a brisk traffic at the port with the arrival of shipments as other major reconstruction projects in the city are taking place at the same time.

Handling and customs teams are working continuously, alongside the movement of transport vehicles transporting supplies to project sites on a regular and continuous basis, amidst a vibrant atmosphere with the arrival of new ships every two or three days.

The Derna Reconstruction Fund said “these projects come as part of ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life and beautify Derna’s coastal sidewalk, making it a cultural and recreational destination for the city’s residents and visitors.”
