Libya: GNU’s Head Meets Mayors of Tripoli’s Nearby Cities

Tripoli—PM Abdulhamid Dbeibeh held a meeting Monday with a number of mayors of Tripoli’s nearby cities during which service and local issues of concern in the municipalities were discussed. They mayors came from Al-Khums, Tarhuna, Mislata, Qasr Al-Akhyar and Misrata, according to a statement by the GNU on its Facebook platform.

“During the meeting, Dbeibeh emphasized the importance of ongoing coordination between the Government of National Unity (GNU)and municipalities to ensure the implementation of projects in accordance with local priorities. He emphasized the need to overcome the administrative and financial obstacles facing municipal councils in carrying out their duties,” said the statement.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Transport and Financial Advisor to the Prime Minister, Mohammed Al-Shahoubi.

According to the GNU, “the mayors gave a detailed presentation on the challenges facing their municipalities, calling for direct government support to accelerate the pace of work on stalled projects and improve the quality of services provided to citizens.”

“They affirmed their support for the government’s efforts to establish security and stability,” the statement added.

Meeting with European Ambassadors to Libya on 19 May after days of unrest in the capital Tripoli that started on 12 May, PM Dbeibeh and expressed his appreciation for their countries’ support for the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its ongoing investigations in Libya.

He reaffirmed that “the state’s vision is clear and explicit, and is based on ending all armed groups outside the army and police institutions, as this is a prerequisite for building a stable civil state governed solely by legitimate institutions,” the statement added.
