Benghazi– The Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Armed Forces, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, his Deputy Saddam Haftar and the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya (SRSG) held a meeting during which they discussed the UN’s proposed political roadmap that would lead to holding national elections during a period yet to be specified.
The Sunday’s meeting also addressed the security situation in the capital Tripoli and the ways to prevent escalation between the armed groups there. It focused on ensuring the safety of residents along with protecting public and private facilities, according to a statement by the LNA’s General Command.
In a follow up discussion between the Deputy Commander-in-Chief and SRSG Hanna Tetteh the talks focused on “the practical steps necessary to implement the roadmap” as such, and on any obstacles that might hinder its implementation, the statement said.
General Saddam Haftar reviewed the efforts made by the General Command to curb the flow of illegal immigration through cooperation and coordination with neighboring countries in the Mediterranean region.
He also highlighted the arrangements made by the LNA’s General Command to receive and shelter tens of thousands of displaced Sudanese, particularly in the city of Kufra in southeastern Libya, and to provide them with necessary healthcare.
He noted, “arrangements are in place for the return of Sudanese brethren to their country through official crossings between the two countries, in direct coordination with the United Nations,” the statement added.
On her part, Ms. Tetteh said the “discussions focused on the UN’s proposed political roadmap leading to national elections and structured dialogue, as well as the security situation Tripoli and broader Libya,” according to a statement published in UNSMIL’s X platform. “Both sides stressed the importance of de-escalation and preventing further conflict,” it added.
The SRSG welcomed the LNA’s cooperation with the UN mission, maintaining that the General Commander and his Deputy “reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the the roadmap through dialogue and inclusive consultation.”
